About Cousin RichieHoward Stern’s Cousin, Richie Gerber, aka Howard Stern Cousin Richie, has been a leading force in the South Florida jazz community as well as the natural foods industry as the former co-owner of The Bread of Life Natural Foods Markets, where jazz went natural. The Bread of Life was known for its great natural foods as well as its world-class jazz. Every weekend Richie produced jazz concerts in his very popular restaurants and delicatessans. Richie, an accomplished sax player, shared the stage with such jazz legends as: Eddie Higgins, Pete Minger, Lou Colombo, Ira Sullivan, Buddy DeFranco, Duffy Jackson, Richie Cole, Billy Ross, Randy Bernsen and Frank Tibari. The Bread of Life was named “Most Unusual Jazz/Blues Spot” in The Jazz and Blues Lovers Guide, 1994 Updated Edition. It goes on to say, “Jazz has its share of strange bedfellows, and in this case, it’s natural foods. Bread of Life owner, Richie Gerber, who is also a saxophonist, heads up a group called, the Nutrients (“Music You Can Assimilate”) and brings in a different guest artist every weekend. The music’s always straight-ahead, with lots of bebop and swing, and some who have played here include Pete Minger, Milton Mustafa, Ira Sullivan and Eddie Higgins.” Cousin
Richie was the former owner of The Bread of Life Natural Foods Markets,
which merged with Whole Foods Market, Inc. (WFMI) in 1997. In the year
2000, Richie retired from the retail natural foods business to pursue
other interests, which include cannibalmusic.com. He was the owner and host of The Natural Grocer Radio Show, South Florida’s Health Talk Radio. Richie interviewed leading edge authors, scientists and personalities in the Alternative/Complementary Medicine Industry. Guests included Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dr. Earl Mindell, Udo Erasmus and Dr. Robert Atkins to name a few. In one interview Richie was asked why he was The Natural Grocer. He responded, “because you can’t get any more natural OR grocer than me.” The show ran for over 10 years. |
